The Gifts of Recovery

If I had not stopped drinking, I most certainly would be dead. I was on my way to cutting my life short. This is what I´ve learned along the way.

I am feeling very grateful to be able to say that I am a sober woman. You may also know that I am an ovarian cancer survivor. Two of what I thought would be the most devastating things to go through have both turned out to be the very best things to happen to me.

If telling my story helps one person…

If I had not stopped drinking, I most certainly would be dead. I was on my way to cutting my life short. What a tragedy that would have been. Not only would I have hurt my husband, my friends and my family, but I wouldn’t be able to share what a blessing it is to be in recovery. My life has changed so much for the better because I stopped drinking.

Be a Badass…

One of the most important things for me to share about recovery is that there is absolutely no shame in admitting that you have a problem.

Acknowledging this to yourself is courageous. Saying it out loud to someone else is brave and vulnerable, which makes you a badass. I am now a badass.

You just never know who is struggling…

The days of “an alcoholic is a wino under the bridge” are over. The chances that your boss, your designer or maybe even the mom next door has a drinking problem are pretty good.

You don’t have to be hospitalized, get a DUI or lose your job to hit rock bottom. I was what you would call a “high bottom drunk”, and I may have kept drinking for a while if I hadn’t tried to shoot myself.

Don’t judge…

Just about everyone struggles with something. It may be drinking, drugs, food, gambling, porn, Netflix, etc.

Here’s the deal, don’t judge. Judging people for coping with their emotions doesn’t do anything to eliminate the stigma of addiction. What it does do is force people who struggle to keep it hidden, not seek help, because they’re so full of shame they can’t bear to admit to themselves or another human being.

Before you judge someone else, look in the mirror.

So, just in case you think you may be drinking more than you should, here’s a few hints:

  • You wake up with a hangover, more often than not.

  • “It’s 5:00 somewhere” is your mantra, sometimes even before noon.

  • You don’t want your kids to drink out of your “water” bottle.

  • Your hands shake so bad you can’t apply your eyeliner.

  • You start considering having a little “nip” in the morning to help start your day.

  • Deep down, in your heart of hearts, you know you have a problem.
